The Region:
The vineyards of Beaujolais fall on the granite rich slopes of a hilly region between Mâcon and Lyon at the southern limit of Burgundy. The only vine variety authorised for red wines is Gamay, traditionally grown as free standing bush vines. A small amount of Chardonnay is also grown. The most favourable vineyard sites produce `villages` wines, and the 10 named `Cru` villages of Beaujolais represent the best vineyards of the region and produce the longest-lived and fullest style of Beaujolais.

The Producer:
Pierre Mezial`s family have been at the property since 1889. The domaine extends to 7 hectares on some of the best slopes of the appelation, the vineyards planted on a combination of sand and granite soils.

Tasting Notes:
The Beaujolais `Cru` Chiroubles is nestled between the hills of Fleurie and Morgon. It is perhaps the least well known of the 10 named `Cru` villages of Beaujolais, yet it is considered one of the best. The vineyard is a combination of sand and granite stones planted with bush vine Gamay vines. The 7 hectare Pontheux domaine is run by Pierre Mezial, whose family have been at the property since 1889. The extraordinary ripeness and tiny yield of the vintage has resulted in a rich wine, exceptionally full for a Beaujolais yet rounded and supple.

Food Pairings:
Perfect with charcuterie, stews and roast chicken.

Alcohol: 12.5%
